MUSC 323: Intro to World Music

This is a survey course in which music is studied within the context of culture. This will involve studying music from a global perspective, exploring music both as sound and as cultural influence. Students will examine representative examples of music in the Western and non-Western world and develop a vocabulary and deeper understanding to discuss the musical and social aspects of each culture. In addition, students will learn to identify style characteristics, structural components, instruments, ensemble types, and folk connections from each culture.
